Pro: Modified Ultrafiltration Is Beneficial for Adults Undergoing Cardiac Surgery

Published:January 17, 2023DOI:https://doi.org/10.1053/j.jvca.2023.01.014
CARDIAC SURGERY often necessitates the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The benefits of CPB include a completely or partially bloodless operative field, ease of thermoregulation, and the ability to arrest and decompress the heart while maintaining oxygen delivery to vital organs. As with any form of extracorporeal circulation, CPB is nonphysiologic and, therefore, can lead to a significant number of deleterious effects that are known to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
